You’ve worked hard for years, and put yourself into your job. You’ve made friends, made a difference, and made some memories. But now you’re leaving, so it’s time to have a party to commemorate a job well done! Here at Zurchers.com, we have all the items you’ll need to plan a perfect retirement party!
Retirement parties come in many varieties, since retirement is a complex thing. You can pick any of a variety of themes to make your party special. For example, you can theme it for a “Permanent Vacation” by having everyone dress in Hawaiian shirts, or you can theme it like a funeral for losing a valued employee. Your imagination is the limit to how you can plan this party.
The purpose of a retirement party is to remember all the good times you have had during your career. Decorations should include memorable pictures from your career. Place photos in an album, as well as around the room.
If you have pictures on a computer, try creating a PowerPoint presentation. Set it up in a common area and set the slideshow to repeat. The dynamic pictures will add motion and excitement to the party decorations.
For activities, it’s traditional to have speeches at retirement parties. Start with a toast, and have coworkers and friends share memories and funny stories about the retiree, including any embarrassing moments, if possible. Keep it nice, and clean, though, and remember to honor the retiree.
Have guests bring gifts for the retiree. If appropriate, have guests bring gag gifts, such as a broken VCR or other things that “don’t work” anymore. Another idea is to bring an alarm clock for the retiree to smash since they no longer have to worry about getting up on time for work. Consider having guests pitch in for a nice gift for the retiree.
Plan food for the party based on the theme you pick. If you are doing a more casual, fun theme, focus on finger-foods and light snacks that are easy to eat while walking around and socializing. If you are having a sit-down meal, make sure to pick appropriate appetizers. Regardless of what you choose, remember to include foods that are the favorite of the retiree.
