This flag of the Soviet Union was adopted in 1923 and was up until the fall of the Soviet Union. The flag was designed plain red with a cross-peen hammer that crosses the sickle, with a red star in the upper canton. The hammer and sickle symbolized the nation's workers and peasants, while the red star symbolized the rule of the Communist goverment.
