Details
Tonga adopted this flag in 1875. The flag looked identical to the Red Cross flag, but to avoid confusion it was changed that the red cross was moved to the upper canton. The flag has been used since 1864, but it was officially adopted in 1875. Clause 47 of the Constitution of Tonga states: "The Flag of Tonga shall never be altered but shall always be the flag of the Kingdom."
