Portugal officially adopted this flag in 1911. The flag is bi-color, with green on the left, red on the right. The lesser version of the national coat of arms is placed over the boundary of the 2 colors. Over the years, colors have been recognized as symbols of the nation (green) and the blood (red) of those who died defending it.
