The state flag of West Virginia consists of the state coat of arms on a white field with a dark blue border. The coat of arms mainly consists of the state seal, which is centered on the white field. Above the coat of arms is a red ribbon that says "State of West Virginia". Inside the coat of arms on a red ribbon is the state motto "Montani Semper Liberi", which means "Mountaineers are always free". He flag was adopted in 1929.
