The state flag of New Mexico was adopted in 1925. It consists of a sun symbol of "Zia" in red on a yellow field. The red and yellow colors are the colors in Spain's flag. Zia has some sacred symbols to it; four is a sacred number which symbolizes the Circle of Life: four winds, four seasons, four directions, and four sacred obligations. The circle binds the four together.
