The state flag of Michigan was adopted in 1911, the 3rd state flag to be adopted. The flag contains the state's coat of arms on a blue field. The coat of arms has 3 inscriptions in Latin: (from op to bottom) E Pluribus Unum" meaning "Out of many, one"; "Tuebor" meaning "I will defend"; and "Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice" meaning "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you", the official state motto.
