The current design of the Louisiana state flag was adopted in 2006, revising the original pelican design of 1912. The flag contains a heraldic charge called a "pelican in her piety" on a blue field. It represents a mother pelican wounding her breast to feed her young with the blood. Under the pelican are the words " Union, Justice and Confidence" on a white ribbon.
