The flag of Italy has been used since 1946, but it was formally adopted in 1948. The flag is a tricolor flag consisting of 3 equal, vertical bands. The bands are green, white and red with green being on the hoist side while red is on the fly. One interpretation of the colors is the green presents the nation's plains, the white represents the snow-capped Alps, and the red represents the blood split in the Wars of Italian Independence.
