The current flag of Fiji was adopted in 1970 after the design of the flag during its rule as a British colony. It contains a bright blue background that symbolizes the Pacific Ocean. The Union Jack represents its links to Great Britain, and the shield in the center was derived from the coat of arms originally granted by Royal warrant in 1908.
